Black and White on Wall Street
by Joseph Jett

An intriguing apologia-cum-moral-tale of corporate misdoing, financial manipulation, and overt racism on Wall Street. Jett made big news in 1994 when the trading firm Kidder Peabody, for which he worked, accused him of chalking up $350 million in nonexistent profits and earning himself $8 million in real bonuses as a result. He eventually proved himself innocent legally, although, as a result of a technical ruling, he is not allowed to work as a trader. His downfall, he writes, came about because he worked the books in unorthodox ways, speculating wildlybut, he insists, legallyon turns in the market from day to day, even hour to hour, and using a battery of sophisticated computer-generated formulas to hedge his wizardry. And it came about, he insists further, because his Wall Street employers could not stomach the idea of a successful black man, especially one who dressed well, played with little regard for the rules, and dated white women. Jett writes of a lifetime spent following his soldier father's insistence that African-Americans' only hope lay ``in economic independence. . . . Only when success, power and inclusion could be determined on an economic scale would blacks have true freedom.'' Jett earned impressive credentials, including a graduate degree in chemical engineering from MIT and a Harvard MBA; even so, he found that Wall Street tolerated and even encouraged racist and sexist behavior that put the lie to his father's faith in self-improvement. (For all that, Jett played the game, lived in a fabulous Manhattan loft, and earned millions.) Jett, with coauthor Chartrand (who co-wrote Flying Safe, Flying Blind with Mary Schiavo), makes his case about corporate racism matter-of-factly and with little appeal to emotion; much of his narrative, in fact, is delivered in the head-spinning language of high finance, and readers without some understanding of how the stock market works will have trouble following him as he ddescribes his financial maneuvers. Convincing and well told, Jett's story should attract much attention. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Yesterday I Cried : Celebrating the Lessons of Living and Loving
by Iyanla Vanzant

Click Book To Buy

What is the lesson in abuse, neglect, abandonment, rejection?

What is the lesson when you lose someone you really love?

Just what are the lessons of life's hard times? Bestselling author Iyanla Vanzant has had an amazing and difficult life -- one of great challenges that unmasked her wonderful gifts and led to wisdom gained. In this simple book, she uses her own personal experiences to show how life's hardships can be re-languaged and re-visioned to become lessons that teach us as we grow, heal, and learn to love. The pain of the past does not have to be today's reality. Iyanla Vanzant is an example of how yesterday's tears become the seeds of today's hope, renewal, and strength.

Just like so many who have read this book, I, too, couldn't hold back the tears. I cried for Iyanla and even for myself when I noticed some similarities in our lives. Then I cried happy tears when Iyanla triumphed and slowly emerged as a woman of great insight after quietly suffering from years of abuse, neglect, and lack of affection. In the end, I was left with a soulful, lighthearted feeling knowing fully well that everything has a purpose in life, and that in the long run, my life, too, will miracously prevail in a manner that someday will make me look back, smile, and say, "I wouldn't have changed a thing."

Wall Street Main Street and the Side Street : A Mad Economist Takes a Stroll
by Julianne Malveaux

Click Book to Buy Julianne Malveaux is one of my favorite talking heads. On CNN, PBS, and MSNBC, she has a feisty "take no prisoners" style of debate. She is unapologetically left and feminist, but she is also quirky, funny, and thought-provoking. This collection of columns is great! She covers lots of economic issues, deals with women and family issues, and also moral issues. My problem with this book is that the essays are too short, and so is the book. I am waiting to read 200 pages in this wonderful woman's voice. Some of my favorite columns: the column where she compares Long Term Capital Management with gamblers; the USA Today column in which she talks about buying her home; a rejoinder to the organizers of the Million Women's March (she is no fan of either the Million Man or Million Woman March, and she explains why); a tribute to Betty Shabazz. This isn't a book you'll read cover to cover. You'll pick it up and put it down, and pick it up again. It is so full of facts, opinions, statistics, and provocation that I expect to be using it as a resource for quite some time.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back
by Terry McMillan

Buy this Book Today! Stella Payne is a successful 42-year-old investment analyst and divorced mother of an 11-year-old son, Quincy. But Stella has begun to feel that her life needs some "groove." On the spur of the moment, she plans a trip to Jamaica to relax and escape from her routine. She meets a man, half her age, whose honesty and physical charm challenge her perceptions of what is acceptable and force her to rethink and re-prioritize her image of herself and her life. Once she returns from her vacation, she recognizes that her life has only been satisfying because it is what was expected from a woman her age. Stella accomplishes her mission of doing something totally out of character by taking her solo vacation and she succeeds at putting more than just a "groove" back into her life. The stream-of-consciousness narration that is utilized for most of this story is a bit awkward at times. McMillan's style here differs markedly from that of Waiting to Exhale, which brought her much "girlfriend" popularity; yet she just may connect with an untapped readership.

Stolen Legacy : Greek Philosophy Is Stolen Egyptian Philosophy
by George G. M. James

"KNOW THY SELF", This phrase, although attributed to Socrates, was found on many of the temples of learning throughout Egypt long before Socrates existed. This is a very important mantra for people of African descent. I personally was in a state of shame of being from African ancestry during the 70's as a young teenager. but upon spending 3 months in Africa at age 19, all that changed. Books such as this are critically important for US in order to debunk the distortions promulgated during this millennium against people of color, and in particular people of African descent. Regardless of what popular (white) culture’s response is to this type of discovery, the important thing for US is to study for ourselves who we are and what we have contributed to the development of the human race. Who cares what THEY think!!!! WE should be well aware of the extent to which THEY will go to remain the superior force on this planet (slavery, world war, historical distortions, genocide, cultural genocide, economic sanctions, etc..). Books such as this and those written by Jochannen, Diop, Van Sertima, Bernal, Al-Mansour, and others, prompt US to re-evaluate everything WE were taught (programmed) to be true. The revelations exposed through the works of these writers, should be the foundation of learning for all of OUR subsequent generations. What I find to be most interesting is the fact that since the works here prompt so much debate, why is it that we do not see not only some of the debate itself, but also some of the factual discoveries borne by the works of these authors on channels such as TLC, A&E, or Discovery. Since WE now have OUR own voice in the national broadcasting world, I think BET should pursue this area further so that more of our younger generation can gain knowledge in these areas. Black History should not be limited to one month, and should not be limited to the civil rights era especially when it spans thousands of years. It is important that WE lift the veil of ignorance OURSELVES and really take a look at everything WE feel WE know to be true. One of my favorite misconceptions is that of certain aspects of the Bible. How many of you know that the 10 Commandments can be found within the 42 Negative Confessions of the Metu Neter, a holy book written long before Moses or the Bible. WHAT HAVE WE BEEN TAUGHT, AND WHY? Stolen Legacy is an excellent book to start questioning the current world order.
